Dostie Homes’ Mediterranean Twins Fit for a Queen

2013 02 Dostie Queens Harbor 19

Late last week, we spent the evening with Dostie Homes, photographing a pair of their Mediterranean-inspired homes in Jacksonville’s Queen’s Harbor neighborhood.  This particular part of Queen’s Harbor is built around an alley system with deep, narrow lots, however despite the geographical restrictions, Dostie managed to create two stunning, spacious 3000+ square foot homes that feel anything but narrow.

As part of our continued efforts to expand our capabilities, we invested in one of those expanding step ladders that allow us to shoot from a height of 13 feet with ease – allowing for elevated shots (top) – and providing for a unique perspective.  We also experimented with multiple lighting sources with this shoot, which helped us to light distant areas more evenly and provide some creative lighting ideas to the shoot.  As always, check out some of our favorite shots from this shoot below.

Dostie’s Gorgeous Glen Kernan Home

2013 01 Dostie 4937 Hunterston 01

On Monday we had the pleasure of shooting another great piece of architecture for our friends at Dostie Homes in Jacksonville’s Glen Kernan community.  The weather wasn’t as cooperative as we had hoped, but it wasn’t as rough as we have had it in the past either – so, we made the most of it and overall, I think things turned out quite well.

The interior of this million dollar home was filled with many surprising extras and unique design elements, such as this amazing study above.  Dostie is always big on small details – making the overall aesthetic impressive.

Lastly, we have a bit of a bonus.  Next door to the house we were shooting is another Dostie home recently completed.  It’s footprint is similar to one of the first houses we photographed for Dostie (Dramatic Dostie Home is Pablo Creek), and the homeowner was nice enough to allow us a few exterior photos.  Above is my favorite shot, complete with a speeding flock of geese.    Check out some of our favorite shots from this shoot below.

Dostie Homes Latest Masterpiece at Pablo Creek

2012 12 Dostie Pablo Creek 05

Just last week, we had the opportunity to shoot another great piece of architecture for our friends at Dostie Homes in Pablo Creek Reserve.  This is the second home we’ve shot in this great development (see Dramatic Dostie Home for our last shoot)   This is the largest home we’ve photographed for the builder, with just under 5,000 square feet of climate controlled space.  As with many of Dostie’s homes, this house sports a wonderfully flowing semi-open floor plan with great little details that all come together to create one great home.

If you’ve been in Jacksonville the past few weeks, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that overcast clouds have been the norm.  So, you may be wondering where the very colorful sky in the top photo came from.  We have an extensive collection of fine art photography, including quite a few ‘big sky’ photos that work perfectly to superimpose into overcast photos.  With over 20 years of Graphic Design experience, we are able to seamlessly insert these backgrounds in a believable way.  It’s just another reason why you can’t find a better combination of quality, value and affordability anywhere else!

Welcoming Warmth at the Amelia Island Holiday Cookie Tour

Though the weather changed little between my first and second shoots up in Amelia Island this weekend, what was poor weather for a farmers market proved the perfect weather for a holiday-themed cookie tour of the historic Bed and Breakfasts of Amelia Island.  The cool weather and overcast skies made the warm and welcoming interiors of these beautiful homes all the more enjoyable.  It certainly got me in the Christmas mood!  On top of beautifully decorated homes, each B&B had its own signature cookie and a recipe card for each guest – and let me tell you, they were good!

This year’s tour encompassed a total of eight bed and breakfasts – many decked out for the holidays!  Below is a list of each B&B with a link to their website, should one of the photos stir a desire to visit one of these beautiful homes.

Panoramic Views & Gorgeous Details with Dreambuilder Custom Homes

Dreambuilder Custom Homes recently completed construction of their latest project – a beautiful two story home in Jacksonville Beach, FL. They had us out last week to photograph this great project.  The weather on the evening of the shoot was really quite splendid and allowed for great lighting both indoor and out.  Sean Starr (Dreambuilder’s President) designed this home from scratch with a really impressive attention to detail and some impressive creativity that really makes this home shine.

One of my favorite spaces in this house was the kitchen/living room area (above).  The space was full of windows that light up the room beautifully during the late afternoon.  Another unique feature was the round tower with wrap around windows that give you a 270 degree view of the quiet little neighborhood on both the first a second floors.  Check out all our favorite shots from the shoot below:

Falling for the Mountains – Foliage Fools Part 3

One last post from our time in the North Carolina mountains – this time featuring the awesome house we rented and our last day of fun, though rather overcast, photography.  Above is one of the last shots from the deck of our wonderful little home away from home.  The sun filtering through the variegated cloud layers cast some amazing highlights on the now-fading mountain foliage.  Blue skies are awesome, but some of my favorite autumn photography is during those rather dreary skies – especially those broken cloud layers that add so much interest to the scene.

Above is the dining area overlooking that awesome view outside.  I really can’t say enough about both the actual little house and its glorious views.  Below is a virtual tour of this unique octagonal home.

Disclaimer: the house pictured above is not an “after” photo of the house we stayed in.  To the best of my knowledge, its still intact.  This house, however, is not.  We found this little house when exploring a dirt road leading to an old Lutheran camp.  Best I can tell, the most recent materials are more than 50 years old, so its probably been slowing decaying for quite some time.  As always, feel free to share, download and enjoy!

Tuscan Inspiration with Dostie Homes

If you live in Northeast Florida, you know Friday was one of those all-day dreary sort of rainy days.  Thursday also happened to be the day we had scheduled to shoot Dostie Home’s latest project in Palencia, just outside of St Augustine proper.  We usually like to schedule backup days for just such weather situations, but due to the fact that the homeowners were moving in that night, we weren’t able to.  So, we made the call to give it a try – a decision I was seriously questioning as I sat for 45 minutes in rain-slowed traffic on a 4 mile stretch of 9A.

But as you can see from the photos, the weather actually worked out quite well.  The nice thing about overcast skies is that they act like a 10,000 foot diffuser, which helps to balance both interior and exterior lighting.  Of course, getting the pretty sky photos may be out of the question, but you can still get some really unique shots.  And this home certainly made my job easy!  It was filled with great design elements, as well as classy upgrades and a gorgeous square-accented bathroom.  Plus, the manufactured stone on the fireplace (which I love) is the same as you’ll find if dining at Seasons 52.  Check out all our favorite shots from the shoot below:

Remembering 9/11: The Ghost of Things Past

Eleven years ago, today, I was spending my morning at school – in the process of working through my fine art degree at Jacksonville University.  Bryn and I had been married a little less than a month, and had been back from our honeymoon for only a few weeks when I walked into the Howard building and discovered from a friend at the Registrar’s Office that the World Trade Center towers had been struck by two airliners.

I immediately went home to be with Bryn, who was between jobs at the time, and I remember sitting, staring at the TV for hours and hours as the towers collapsed, a plane hit the Pentagon and another went down in a rural part of Pennsylvania.  I remember just staring at the TV in a daze as reporters began to piece together what had happened and as the reality of just how many lost their lives began to sink in.

And so, today, in remembrance of the lives lost, the families destroyed and the brave acts of so many men and women on that day, I honor you all with this composite image of the Freedom Tower (photographed in late July on our way up to NH) with a faint ghost of the two towers as they stood for 30 years at the gateway to America.

“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.”
(2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 ESV)

Fine Art Series – Travels North Part 8: Restoring Bedford Springs

Photo of original framed photograph at Bedford Springs Circa 1886

While in PA, we took a quick trip to Bedford, PA to explore the newly renovated Bedford Springs Resort.  1796 Marked the beginning of this wonderful resort, when Doctor John Anderson purchased  a 2,200 acre parcel where these noteworthy springs bubbled to the surface.  Soon, people the world over came to visit these enchanting waters.  By the early 1800s, a hotel was built and over the next 100 years, expanded exponentially – encompassing much of the footprint you see today.  Unfortunately, in the 1980s, the resort was closed and quickly fell into disrepair.  However, this would not be the last chapter for this storied resort.

In 1998, the resort was purchased and an extensive restoration and expansion was begun. In 2007, the resort opened its doors again for the first time in over 20 years.  As you can see from the photos below, the resort certainly retains its old Victorian charm – taking guests back to a slower, more leisurely time.  Here are a few of my favorite shots.   Enjoy – and of course, feel free to download as a desktop wallpaper!

Mediterranean Symmetry with Dostie’s Latest Home

Just last night, we had the pleasure of shooting another wonderful residence for our friends at Dostie Homes.   This one, located in Palencia, is a Mediterranean-inspired two level home with twin two car garages (very appealing to a guy like me!).  We photographed this house pre-furnishings, so you’ll clearly be able to see all the unique details and creative design that went into this home.

This home has some great extras, like outdoor kitchen, GE’s latest line of Cafe appliances, gorgeous views of the golf course, and floor-to-ceiling cabinetry.  But for me, by far, my favorite extra was the corner sliding glass doors.  Not only do these doors complete disappear behind the wall when opened, but in the kitchen area, the doors are mounted at the corner, making a gigantic opening that really blends the two living spaces amazingly well.

Sunrise Photos at Dostie’s Latest Home

Earlier this week, we had the chance to spend a morning (a very early morning) with our friends at Dostie Homes, photographing their latest home off of Scott Road in Jacksonville, FL.   The home itself is a unique combination of modern design and top of the line amenities, with several throwback tributes from 1970′s homes.  The result is a great looking home that offers guests a welcoming, comfortable, almost familiar environment.

Capturing History: The Boca Raton Resort & Club

We recently had the pleasure of shooting the Boca Raton Resort and Club for one of our commercial clients.  This 1000+ room resort began its life during the Florida Land Boom as the Cloister Inn, built in 1926 as the most expensive 100 room hotel in the world.  Since then, the hotel has gradually, though steadily grown into one of the top resorts in Florida.  With 7 swimming pools, two professional golf courses, eleven restaurants, and hundreds of feet of ocean-front property, its no wonder!

Also – neat fact:  During WWII the resort played an essential role as a barracks housing soldiers for nearby Boca Raton Army Air Force Base. The troops affectionately called it “the most elegant barracks in history”.

Anyway, here are several of our favorite photos from the shoot – as always, downloadable as HD desktop wallpaper.  Enjoy!
