Falling for the Mountains – Foliage Fools Part 1

This past week, we had the pleasure of spending a few days in the mountains of North Carolina.  From a few of the locals we spoke to, it looks like we had just missed peak colors, but to be honest, compared to anything we get in FL, this was spectacular.  Above is a photo from the deck of our 4,400 foot-high lodging as the sun was rising over the valley below – amazing location, right?   If I owned this little piece of glory, chances are I would spend every fall there – and most summers, and springs…

On the first day of our trip (slightly delayed as a result of a particularly nasty family-wide stomach bug), we began the climb to the mountains up NC 181.  At our first stop, Brown Mountain (As an aside, a few years ago I discovered this great old Bluegrass song called the Brown Mountain Lights – its about mysterious lights that have appeared atop this mountains for over a century – here’s the Wikipedia link: Brown Mountain Lights), there was quite a bit of green as you can see from the first image in the slideshow, but thankfully as we went upward and westward, the colors exploded.

The image above is from the first morning in the mountains, about 45 minutes after sunrise – the little winding road leading down from house was full of these beautiful little hollows – lit perfectly by the morning sun.

And so, I’ll leave you with this for now.  Many more photos (and perhaps a story or two) to come!  Enjoy – and of course, feel free to download as a desktop wallpaper!
