Photo of the Day: Lighting over the Dames Point

1920 x 1280 DS Wallpaper 143 Dames Point Lightening

I stepped outside this evening to take a look at the tree frogs that have taken over the front of our house, only to see some pretty frequent lightning to our Northwest.  What did I do next, you ask?  Well I pulled up the radar to see where the most intense cells were, made sure they were safely distant and determined that I might just be able to get a good shot of the Dames Point Bridge with a bit of lightning sprinkled in the back.  Unfortunately, in the ten minutes it took me to get down to my favorite spot, the storm had dissipated and the intense stuff mostly moved south. But I was still able to snap a few shots as hoped before all the activity shifted.  Here’s my favorite.  As always, please feel free to download the image – it is full HD 1080P – perfect for desktop wallpaper!

Celebrating Accomplishments with the Jax Chamber

2013 07 Commercial Chamber Graduation 01 Jacksonville

Last week we had the privilege of again working with the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce to capture the awards gala for two groups of Jacksonville-area women entrepreneurs.   The Marketing Matters group graduated after many months of workshops, one-on-one mentoring and development designed to help them take their businesses to the next level.  Similarly, the Developing Your Family Childcare Business group gathered to celebrate the graduation of both their 2012 and 2013 classes.

While the Chamber continues to undergo renovations, this event was generously hosted by Episcopal High School, along the St johns River.   Be sure to check out the great looking hors d’oeuvres as well – provided by d’Vine Cuisine. Below are some of our favorite shots from the shoot – enjoy!

Food Trucks and a River Cruise at the Ritz-Carlton!

2013 07 Event Ritz Carlton Partner 11 Culinary

After some travel time and a few weeks of catching up, we again had the pleasure of photographing a great group up at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island.   The event planning staff at the resort always comes up with great ideas and fun activities for their corporate guests, as was the case with this event.  The welcome reception was hosted in one of the resort’s great function foyers, with two food trucks located just outside the doors on the Oceanfront Lawn.

The culinary staff at the resort really makes my job easy – they take great care in not only making their entrees taste great, but also look amazing, as evidenced by the photos in the gallery at the bottom of this post. When you browse through the photos, make sure to take a close look at the first picture – it may just look like a collection of nicely arranged vegetables, but it is actually an array of hand-crafted marzipan creations!   And that was just Tuesday night.

We also had the privilege of photographing the group’s excursion along the coastal waterways surrounding Amelia Island.  The lunch cruise aboard the Naples Princess, a great new addition to the NE Florida charter fleet, provided the perfect platform to see the historic area’s best, including Fort Clinch and the wild horses of Cumberland Island.  We even had the pleasure of seeing two foals with their mothers.     As always, feel free to download any or all of the images for use as desktop wallpaper!  Enjoy!

Exploring East: Travels Along the Atlantic States – Gettysburg + 150 Years

2013 07 Fine Art Mid Atlantic 12 Gettysburg 150th Civil War

After a wonderful trip to New England, it was reluctantly time to head south.  Instead of more or less tracking along interstate 95, we took a detour to the pastoral Pennsylvania farmland to visit Gettysburg.  Though we were not able to make the 150th anniversary, we arrived at the tail end of the week marking the pivotal battle of the American Civil War.  As a photographer and graphic designer, the history of the above 1863 photo, superimposed onto one of my own photographs, is fascinating and scary.  If you thought photo manipulation was a modern invention, you would be wrong.  Today, it’s a simple task to take a photo, add a person here or remove a piece of the background there.  But in 1863, battlefield photographers had their own approach.  The dead man in this famous picture “The home of a Rebel Sharpshooter” , captured by Alexander Gardner  has recently been discovered to be a staged photograph.  The soldier is believed to have fallen over 300 feet away, his body along with his rifle (not a sharpshooter’s rifle as the title would suggest) were moved by blanket to this pile of defensive rocks raised between two boulders in Devil’s Den.

In total, over 170,000 troops amassed to wage war in the sleepy little farm town of Gettysburg, PA.  It all began on July 1st, 1863 when confederate troops descended from the north, while Federal troops amassed from the south.  When the battle ended three bloody days later, 7,863 men lay dead in the fields, and another 27,224 wounded were spread throughout the region in churches, schools, barns and homes converted into makeshift field hospitals.

The above two photos capture the area known ever since the was as The Angle – the site of the last desperate Confederate push to turn the day.   With the Federal troops positioned on a rise, with fences and a stone wall between them and the advancing Confederate line, it was a bloodbath.  The Confederate losses were staggering – the casualty rate was over 50%.  Pickett’s division alone had 2,655 casualties.  It was a bloody affair.

Though our visit was all to quick, the somber memory and ghostly quiet of the battlefield will stay with me for quite some time.  And, on a brighter note, enjoy the photos – and of course, feel free to download as HD desktop wallpaper below!

Exploring East: Travels Along the Atlantic States – 3 Million Legos Make History!

2013 07 Fine Art New England 65 Manchester Lego Mill

Our next stop on the great museum tour of 2013 was in Manchester, NH.  The SEE Science Center, housed inside one of the old turn-of-the-century Amoskeag mill buildings, has a fascinating collection of hands-on science for all ages, not to mention a gigantic Lego model of Manchester and her mills, built to represent what you would see in 1900. Over three million Lego bricks, and who knows how many thousands of hours went into building this massive cityscape that includes over 8,000 Lego People, is over 70 feet long, 25 feet wide and has two working rail systems.  If, like myself, you spent much of your childhood assembling, destroying and rebuilding Lego creations, a visit to SEE is certainly a treat.

A bit about the mills that this awesome Lego model showcases:
The Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, founded in 1810 (the same year Derryfield changed its name to Manchester, after the English town known as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution), would eventually build the world’s largest textile company with over 20 mills lining the shores and canals of the Merrimack River.  At its peak, it employed over 17,000 people, had 5.8 million square feet of floorspace, and boasted the world’s largest single cotton mill, stretching over 900 feet long and containing 4000 looms.*   Unfortunately, with the end of “The War to End all War” (Spoiler – it didn’t), the decline of the US economy, and the rise of labor, the mill slowly died, and in 1935, closed its doors for the last time.  As if this were not enough, the great flood of ’36 ended any hopes of a revival of the textile trade in Manchester.

But doom and gloom aside, Manchester survived, and the mills, which stood laregely abandoned for decades, have become upscale housing, retail, and even museums – not unlike the SEE Science Center.  But the real burning question is; since the model of the mills is in one of the mills, does the model have a model in it?  The world may never know!  As always, enjoy – and of course, feel free to download as HD desktop wallpaper below!
