9-11: Newlyweds in a Sea of Tragedy

2012 09 11

Bryn and I had been married less than a month.  We had just returned from our honeymoon and I was just a few weeks into the fall semester at JU.  On that morning, 12 years ago, I had gone to school, and was in the administration building taking care of some business.  I knew something was odd when I walked up to the counter – the usually bustling sounds of work had all but stopped.  On the TV was the World Trade Center ablaze.

I soon found out what had happened, Terrorists has hijacked two aircraft and deliberately flown them into the Twin Towers.  It was no accident, as previously thought, but an act of villainy and evil our generation had never seen.  It was nothing short of shocking.  As a result, I returned home to be with Bryn and for the next 12 hours, we watched the coverage – we saw the towers fall – we saw footage from Washington, Pennsylvania and New York – we saw an endless line of people walking out of New York City – and we grappled with the staggering number of dead.

Twelve years later, as we again remember the attack and those who selflessly risked and lost their lives attempting to save others, may we never forget the cost.

As much as this day has impacted all Americans, please take a moment to remember and pray for the thousands of families for whom this day is a bitter and stinging reminder of loved ones lost.

As a Christian, it is times like these that call to remembrance the Lord’s Prayer, and Christ’s request: “Your kingdom come”.  There is hope in this reality.  There is coming a day, by the work of Christ on the cross, where pain and sorrow will cease, fear and death will be no more, and joy will be forevermore.   IF we are in Christ – this is our certain future:

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” – Revelation 21:3-4 ESV

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.” -Revelation 22:1-5 ESV

It Rained and Poured for 40 Minutes, Minutes!

2013 08 Fine Weather Jacksonville 01

Another evening of dramatic weather for the Jacksonville, FL area today.  Thankfully, I don’t think we have had any tornadoes this eveninng, but the lightning was cracking and the rain came down in 5 gallon buckets!  I went out between meetings to take a few photos.  Here’s some of our favorites!  Enjoy the photos – and of course, feel free to download as HD desktop wallpaper below!

EXTREME Weather – Jacksonville EF2 Tornado Photos, but Abiding Beauty

2013 08 Weather Jacksonville Tornado EF2 02

What a Day for Wild Weather in Jacksonville, FL!  At our office, we collected 5.2 inches of rain in under 2 hours!  And if that weren’t amazing enough, just a few miles down the road, a quarter-mile wide EF2 tornado touched down and caused extensive damage.  Tornadoes and waterspouts are somewhat common to our area, with one or two a year, but it is extremely rare for an EF2 tornado to hit northern Florida.  Thankfully, no one was killed or seriously injured, and the Tornado was only on the ground for a half mile or less, but as you can see from the photos, it caused quite the damage.  Be sure to look at the gallery to see the 2×4 imbedded half way through a second story wall.

2013 08 Weather Jacksonville Tornado EF2 10

However, the day was not entirely marked by destruction. As I was headed home after shooting the aftermath of the tornado, I saw this amazing afterglow from the sunset.  Amazing!  Enjoy the photos – and of course, feel free to download as HD desktop wallpaper below!

Memorial Bridge – Rediscovering a 90 Year Old Panorama

So, I’ve always been a big history fan.  Recently, this has manifested itself in a borderline obsession with the Memorial Bridge, in Portsmouth, NH.  In researching the building of the bridge at The Portsmouth Athenaeum’s website, I found a large archive of photos from the construction process (see the video I created below from 1920’s news reel and photos during the construction of the bridge).   But what really peaked my interest was a series of 6 photos, taken from the same vantage point (the top of the North Tower) and seeming to have been designed to be displayed together in a primitive sort of panorama.

And that got me wondering – would it be possible to stitch these 90 year old photos together into a modern panorama?  First, I tried our commercial stitching program, but due to slight differences in the images and limited overlap, it wasn’t coming together as I hoped.  So much for the easy way!  But by this point I was determined – and started to stitch the photos together manually using Photoshop.  After about an hour, I had a pretty presentable final product (above).

I still get a kick out of the idea that 90 year old images, taken with a comparatively rudimentary camera, were able to be turned into a modern panorama.  Pretty exciting stuff – Enjoy!

HD Time Lapse – Remembering the Memorial Bridge

As you may have heard, last night the main span of the Memorial Bridge (Portsmouth, NH) was floated out – severing the 89 year connection the bridge made between New Hampshire and Maine.  As a tribute, I put together the video below.  It incorporates a few of our images, but even better than that, I put together a multiple-camera HD time lapse video from the webcam photos of PortsmouthWebcam.com.  Being 1,200 or so miles from Portsmouth, it was a real blessing to be able to watch the bridges final hours.  Many kudos to the folks that put these webcams together!

The video finishes with vintage footage and a few vintage stills from news reels back in the 1920s that feature the construction and opening day for the bridge.  If you would like to read more about this great bridge and see more photos of its inauguration, check out SeacoastNH.com.

Here’s the full 2 minute HD YouTube video below:

Andres & Carla’s Romantic (And Hillarious) Engagement!

We have some pretty special news – our photographer, Andres, is now engaged to his sweetheart Carla!  Andres asked Carla to marry him over Thanksgiving weekend and she said yes! However, the special plans Andres had for the big question encountered a few hiccups along the way… Thankfully, Nate was there to document the adventure!

Above, you can see what appears to be Andres, Carla, his car, loose sand and the ocean – probably not the best combination.  Andres had a wonderful plan in place for this very special day.  Nate was to arrive at Huguenot Park in advance of the couple, well before dawn, to setup video and photography in a hidden location.  Soon after, the couple were going to arrive, drive out to where he was stationed, and Andres would sing her a song, read her some Scripture, and as the sun was rising, get down on one knee and ask for her hand in marriage.  What happened instead was much more amusing!

We awoke on the morning of the engagement to discover a line of intense storms bearing down on the First Coast.  At best, it looked like we would have 15 minutes between sunrise and torrential rain.   But, we persevered and when Nate arrived at the park, he drove all the way out to the ocean, only to discover the tide was unusually high – making the 1/4 mile drive out to the Jetties impossible. Nate texted Andres.

Unfortunately, Andres didn’t receive Nate’s text, and drove out to the ocean himself.  He soon discovered two things.  First, he was not going to be able to drive to the Jetties.  Second, his car was hopelessly stuck in some very loose sand.  At this point (and to Carla’s surprise) Nate just happened to appear around the corner and offered his assistance.  With Nate’s help, they were able to get the car out of one hole, but it quickly bogged down again – and as Andres and Nate tried to push the car out, all it did was sink further and further into the wet and spongy sand.

It was at about this time that the sun began peek over the horizon.  As you can see above, the car proved to be a wonderful vantage point for Carla – Andres on the other hand was up to his elbows in sand at the time.  With the rain and wind quickly picking up and with the tide now receding, the three ‘amigos’ decided it would be best to hop into Nate’s car and find a place to wait out the rain.  They landed at a great little restaurant near the ferry terminal on Heckshire – Nicole’s on the River.  The food was great, the portions were generous [and by generous I mean gigantic], and the prices can’t be beat.

So – long story made slightly shorter – they spent an hour at Nicole’s, the rain subsided, and they headed back to the stranded car.  With the tide now 40 feet out, the sand had hardened up nicely, and a kind surfer (and his 4×4) was able to pull the car free.  With the crisis averted, Andres and Carla were free to take a stroll, enjoy the ocean, and oh, yes, get engaged!  Congratulations you two!  Here’s to many years of love and joy!

Deremer Studios to be Featured in 2012 Book of Lists!

I am proud to announce some great news!  Last week we received word that two of my fine art pieces (above) will be featured in the Jacksonville Business Journal’s 2012 Book of Lists.  Every other year, the Business Journal features ten local photographs to use in this great resource.  In 2010, Deremer Studios was also featured in the Book of Lists – three out of the ten pieces were from Deremer Studios that year.

Faster, Easier, Better – Website Redesign!

Recently, I was listening to Marketplace and was reminded of the old adage, “Simpler is Better”.  That got me to thinking (A dangerous thing, I know).  And so I asked myself, how can I make the Deremer Studios site simpler?  My answer was to completely redo the main page.  I removed all Flash components, simplified the layout, and added simple, clear links to all of our most popular pages.  The result is what you see above. Check it out here!

Feedback is welcome!
