9-11: Newlyweds in a Sea of Tragedy

2012 09 11

Bryn and I had been married less than a month.  We had just returned from our honeymoon and I was just a few weeks into the fall semester at JU.  On that morning, 12 years ago, I had gone to school, and was in the administration building taking care of some business.  I knew something was odd when I walked up to the counter – the usually bustling sounds of work had all but stopped.  On the TV was the World Trade Center ablaze.

I soon found out what had happened, Terrorists has hijacked two aircraft and deliberately flown them into the Twin Towers.  It was no accident, as previously thought, but an act of villainy and evil our generation had never seen.  It was nothing short of shocking.  As a result, I returned home to be with Bryn and for the next 12 hours, we watched the coverage – we saw the towers fall – we saw footage from Washington, Pennsylvania and New York – we saw an endless line of people walking out of New York City – and we grappled with the staggering number of dead.

Twelve years later, as we again remember the attack and those who selflessly risked and lost their lives attempting to save others, may we never forget the cost.

As much as this day has impacted all Americans, please take a moment to remember and pray for the thousands of families for whom this day is a bitter and stinging reminder of loved ones lost.

As a Christian, it is times like these that call to remembrance the Lord’s Prayer, and Christ’s request: “Your kingdom come”.  There is hope in this reality.  There is coming a day, by the work of Christ on the cross, where pain and sorrow will cease, fear and death will be no more, and joy will be forevermore.   IF we are in Christ – this is our certain future:

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” – Revelation 21:3-4 ESV

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.” -Revelation 22:1-5 ESV

EXTREME Weather – Jacksonville EF2 Tornado Photos, but Abiding Beauty

2013 08 Weather Jacksonville Tornado EF2 02

What a Day for Wild Weather in Jacksonville, FL!  At our office, we collected 5.2 inches of rain in under 2 hours!  And if that weren’t amazing enough, just a few miles down the road, a quarter-mile wide EF2 tornado touched down and caused extensive damage.  Tornadoes and waterspouts are somewhat common to our area, with one or two a year, but it is extremely rare for an EF2 tornado to hit northern Florida.  Thankfully, no one was killed or seriously injured, and the Tornado was only on the ground for a half mile or less, but as you can see from the photos, it caused quite the damage.  Be sure to look at the gallery to see the 2×4 imbedded half way through a second story wall.

However, the day was not entirely marked by destruction. As I was headed home after shooting the aftermath of the tornado, I saw this amazing afterglow from the sunset.  Amazing!  Enjoy the photos – and of course, feel free to download as HD desktop wallpaper below!

Memorial Bridge – Rediscovering a 90 Year Old Panorama

So, I’ve always been a big history fan.  Recently, this has manifested itself in a borderline obsession with the Memorial Bridge, in Portsmouth, NH.  In researching the building of the bridge at The Portsmouth Athenaeum’s website, I found a large archive of photos from the construction process (see the video I created below from 1920’s news reel and photos during the construction of the bridge).   But what really peaked my interest was a series of 6 photos, taken from the same vantage point (the top of the North Tower) and seeming to have been designed to be displayed together in a primitive sort of panorama.

And that got me wondering – would it be possible to stitch these 90 year old photos together into a modern panorama?  First, I tried our commercial stitching program, but due to slight differences in the images and limited overlap, it wasn’t coming together as I hoped.  So much for the easy way!  But by this point I was determined – and started to stitch the photos together manually using Photoshop.  After about an hour, I had a pretty presentable final product (above).

I still get a kick out of the idea that 90 year old images, taken with a comparatively rudimentary camera, were able to be turned into a modern panorama.  Pretty exciting stuff – Enjoy!
